CANDY is Good for Your Child’s Vision
Parents are always wondering if something can be done to prevent their child’s vision from getting worse. There are many studies that show that OrthoK can slow down the progression of myopia, but the CANDY study (Controlling Astigmatism and Nearsightedness in Developing Youth) has the most interesting name. Most surprising is that the studies also show that fitting children in glasses and contacts, make the myopia progress more rapidly. So parents have a choice: fitting them in contacts or glasses and their prescription will increase each year, or fitting them in OrthoK lenses and the prescription will probably not increase as quickly each year. The chart below shows prescriptions increasing (blue line) for children wearing traditional contacts and glasses. Children using OrthoK treatment (red line) showed much slower increase in prescription.
