Ortho-K (Orthokeratology)
Improve Vision While You Sleep
OrthoK (short for orthokeratology) is a nonsurgical procedure using specially designed lenses to gently reshape the curvature of the eye while you sleep to improve vision. Ideal candidates are patients who do not want to wear contact lenses during the day and children who are beginning to be nearsignted. 20/20 vision can be restored in as little as one day to one month depending on severity. Ortho-K is a less expensive and an alternative to surgical vision correction.
Controlling Myopia (Nearsightedness)
Myopia (nearsightedness) is a progressive disease affecting 1.6 billion children and adults worldwide and the percentage of Americans affected by this disease has increased over the last 30 years. Myopia can also place children at risk for eye diseases like retinal detachments and glaucoma as they reach adulthood. In recent studies, OrthoK has been shown to slow down the progression of myopia. The studies also indicated that wearing glasses or contact lenses in nearsighted children makes the nearsightedness progress more rapidly.
Benefits of OrthoK
- No glasses or contact lenses during the day
- Less expensive than surgery
- An alternative surgery
